Air Abrasion is a technique that was invented back in the 1950's for conservative treatment and  removal of tooth decay or discoloration. Unfortunately, the high speed air turbine was also invented about this time and "stole it's thunder" and the technique never caught on. However, recent advances in dental bonding procedures and higher interest in conservative and preventive treaments has brought new interest. Dr Smith at Applewood has been using the technique since 1995 for select cases where it is the most ideal method of tooth preparation. Since there is no heat or vibration as there is in the use of a High Speed Turbine, anaesthetics are rarely required. This makes it the ideal choice for primary teeth (children) or small discolorations on your front teeth that have never seemed "worth" the trouble to get fixed. It has a multitude of uses and we enjoy having it in our armamentarium.
